A Tranquil Haven for Wildlife

In developing a diverse, fruitful, and long-lasting landscape, we inevitably attract an entire world of insects, birds, bats, mammals, and other wildlife. Bellefontaine was founded as St. Louis’ first rural cemetery, but today it is surrounded by neighborhoods and industry. Nonetheless, the Arboretum remains a tranquil haven for local wildlife, providing an important natural sanctuary and habitat in the urban environment. Our grounds are home to a diverse array of creatures, including red fox, raccoons, red-tailed hawks, wild turkeys, wood ducks, and many migratory birds.

A Sanctuary for All Seasons

At Bellefontaine Cemetery, many of our wild friends find that our serene atmosphere—with its large, old-growth trees and dense plantings—makes for an excellent spot to settle down and raise a family. From mammals to insects, the Cemetery fosters an environment very conducive to the nesting habits of various animals.

Bellefontaine staff work to encourage such habitat by sometimes disregarding common garden practices. We leave stands of dead perennial leaves and stems, as many small birds and mammals will hide their homes in the thick, dense material. In fact, some of our native bees will use the pithy stems left behind by perennial hibiscus, milkweed, and aster to burrow inside and lay eggs. Our wild friends also utilize existing features to build nests, like dead and/or hollow trees. Great-horned owls, raccoons, and flying squirrels often find a haven in tree cavities. Even after a plant is dead or dormant, its remnants can still provide a setting for life.

The Symbolism of the Fox

Our beloved annual Spring event, the Fox Trot 5K, pays homage to the enchanting foxes that inhabit our area. In various Native American cultures, the fox is seen as a powerful symbol, often representing the spirit of ancestors when encountered in sacred spaces such as burial grounds. This profound connection serves as a reminder of the intricate relationship we share with nature and the serene environment we strive to preserve. As participants lace up their running shoes and embark on this journey, they not only honor the legacy of the fox but also celebrate the harmony between the wild and the peaceful sanctuary we have cultivated together.

Partnering for Wildlife

Bellefontaine Cemetery and the St. Louis Zoo have a unique partnership that highlights a commitment to sustainable and innovative animal care. Our specially cultivated "field-to-forage" plots provide a consistent and fresh harvest of edible plants to supplement the zoo's animals' diets. This initiative is a sustainable approach to animal nutrition, ensuring a supply of harvests for years to come. Visitors to Bellefontaine are welcome to observe the progress of these growing plots during their visits.

A Home for All Creatures

The compassionate spirit of Bellefontaine extends to all creatures that find their way to our grounds.
