Our Living Collection of Trees
Trees play a crucial role in the history and future of Bellefontaine Cemetery & Arboretum. Our grounds feature a diverse collection of nearly 10,000 trees and shrubs, representing about 600 species and varieties. Sourced from Missouri, the Midwest, and temperate regions worldwide, these trees not only enhance the landscape but also contribute to our ecosystem by producing oxygen, reducing erosion, and moderating the climate, creating a tranquil space for all visitors.
Trees with a Story
Beyond their ecological benefits, many of our trees have fascinating stories to tell. Take the paperbark maple, a native of China, with its cinnamon-colored bark that peels artfully from its trunk. Or the Osage orange, a native tree historically used as a windbreak along countless American fence lines. Early Midwestern settlers once relied on shingle oaks for roof shingles and post oaks for fence posts. The golden rain tree, brought to America as a gift to Thomas Jefferson in 1809, boasts seed pods that resemble paper lanterns.
The incredible variety of our arboreal collection creates a unique landscape that changes with every season. Enjoy flowering trees in spring, lush summer shade, glorious fall foliage, and the sculptural beauty of deciduous trees in the winter months.
The Legacy of a Champion
Bellefontaine was once home to three state champion trees in Missouri, including a majestic shingle oak that stood over 100 feet tall for decades. This tree provided habitat for animals, a highlight for our visitors, and a restful shady location for a moment of solitude.
Unfortunately, trees have limited lifespans. After several years of decline, the champion shingle oak was removed in 2022. However, the story didn't end there. A portion of its trunk will remain standing as a wildlife tree, with holes and cavities serving as a haven for birds and other life. This living monument is a powerful reminder of nature’s enduring, transformational qualities.
Make a Gift Or Volunteer
The beauty and variety of our tree collection is made possible by our dedicated garden volunteers, community partners, and the financial support of the Friends of Bellefontaine. When you make a gift, you help us bring in innovative solutions to keep this urban green space thriving for years to come.
A True Level III Arboretum
Not only do our trees provide essential ecological benefits, but they also have some pretty amazing stories to share! For instance, the paperbark maple, which comes from China, has this beautiful cinnamon-colored bark that peels off in a really artistic way. Then there's the Osage orange, a native tree that was once used as a windbreak along many American fences. Early Midwestern settlers relied on shingle oaks for their roofs and post oaks for sturdy fence posts. And let’s not forget the golden rain tree, which was brought to America as a special gift for Thomas Jefferson back in 1809—its seed pods look just like charming little paper lanterns!
The wonderful variety of our tree collection creates a unique landscape that changes with every season. Enjoy the lovely blossoms in spring, the refreshing shade in summer, the stunning fall colors, and the beautiful shapes of deciduous trees during the winter months. It’s a treat for the eyes all year round!
