A Landscape of Color
Flowers at Bellefontaine Cemetery & Arboretum bring a vibrant palette of color to our landscape, transforming the grounds with the changing seasons. They are thoughtfully integrated throughout our property, adding splashes of color along paths, at memorials, and within our dedicated gardens, creating a serene and ever-changing environment.
Beyond Beauty
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, our flowers serve a vital purpose. They are a crucial component of our healthy ecosystem, providing essential food and habitat for pollinators like bees and butterflies. Each bloom is a part of our living collection, and many hold historical and symbolic significance, contributing to the rich artistry of our grounds.
Our Dedicated Floral Collections
Bellefontaine is home to several distinct floral collections, each with a unique story and purpose.
Daffodil Hill
Located in Creve Coeur Valley, this incredible display features over 250,000 daffodil bulbs planted by our dedicated volunteers and horticulture team. This collection creates a spectacular spring show from March to early April. The sight of the hillside bursting into vibrant color is one of the most anticipated and celebrated signs of spring at the Arboretum.

Lilies
Our grounds feature a diverse living collection of lilies. The gardens of Wildwood Valley contain 3,125 bulbs of true lilies (Lilium), while our Crinum, or cemetery lilies, are noted for their large, fragrant blooms. You can also find beautiful hardy water lilies (Nymphaea) at the Sunset Pool, which evoke feelings of peace, serenity, and quiet beauty.
Azaleas
The diverse azalea and rhododendron collection offers a brilliant array of colors and blooms peaking from April to May. You can find these vibrant shrubs near the Hotchkiss Chapel and Willow Gardens. This collection includes varieties with native plant connections to the Southeastern United States, creating a beautiful transition of color across the grounds.
Judith Watters Memorial Irises
In honor of longtime volunteer Judy Watters, we are home to a selection of over a thousand irises from her personal, award-winning collection. Plantings around the historic Hawthorn Gatehouse and along roadways serve as a beautiful memorial to Judy. With their rich colors and forms, these irises stand as a fitting tribute to her dedication.
